When we first proposed getting together as a community to sponsor a Syrian family, the response was overwhelming. In just a few weeks volunteers mobilized to raise funds, file paperwork and furnish a house. On October 29, 2015, the Al Jasem family arrived – mom, dad, grandmother and 11 children. They were grateful to be safe. But their greatest concern, every day, remained their displaced relatives back home. With the community’s support, we were able to undertake sponsorships for their closest relatives.
Three families were reunited in February 2016. Pictured are Abdel Malek Al Jasem and his wife Sawsan Mostafa, along with Sawsan’s brothers, Adnan and Nasredine Mustafa and their families. After a long wait, their sister Kowthar and her family arrived in September 2017. PEC Syria is currently pursuing resettlement for three of Abdel Malek’s brothers.
